Encouraging Empathy and Curiosity

Whether it’s a classmate on the autism spectrum or our visually impaired Miss Brittany, your child probably has someone in her life with a disability that they might have questions about. No matter what the situation, it’s essential to be prepared and to address your child’s curiosity about disabilities as openly and honestly as you can.

It’s OK to Notice

Kids, especially young ones, are naturally curious, so when they see someone with a disability, their first instinct is to ask about it. This is why we helped the children understand Miss Brittany’s challenges by blindfolding them and teaching them how to use a blind guide cane. The kids had fun and developed a better understanding and empathy for others.
